New Delhi, Nov 26: India is examining Bangladesh’s renewed request to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday.

At the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the matter is under legal and judicial review.

“The request is being examined as part of ongoing judicial and internal legal processes. We remain committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country, and will continue to engage constructively in this regard with all stakeholders,” he said.

Dhaka recently sent a fresh diplomatic note to New Delhi after Hasina, along with former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, was handed a death sentence by the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) over charges linked to last year’s unrest. Former police chief and state witness Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was sentenced to five years in prison. The renewed request comes days after the verdict, with Bangladesh formally urging India to hand over the convicted individuals.
