India, Canada hold pre-Foreign Office consultations to rebuild ties
New Delhi, Sep 19: Officials of India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Global Affairs Canada held pre-Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in New Delhi on Friday, as the two countries seek to stabilise and rebuild ties.
The Indian delegation was led by Secretary (East) P. Kumaran, while the Canadian side was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison.
The meeting follows the bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis on June 17, 2025.
Both sides reviewed the state of India–Canada relations and exchanged views on regional and global issues.
They reaffirmed the importance of bilateral ties anchored in shared democratic values, rule of law, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and welcomed recent progress, including the return of High Commissioners to each other’s capitals.
In line with the understanding reached between the two Prime Ministers to restore stability and pursue a constructive partnership, the delegations agreed to initiate steps to reactivate dialogue mechanisms in areas such as trade, defence, energy, civil nuclear cooperation, critical minerals, space, science and technology, agriculture, security and law enforcement.
They also discussed addressing capacity-related issues at missions and consulates to better support economic and people-to-people ties.
Deputy Foreign Minister Morrison also held a separate meeting with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during his visit.
