New Delhi, May 10: Marking the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over fascism in 1945, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar underscored the importance of international cooperation and the evolving global order during a commemorative event hosted by the Russian Embassy in New Delhi on Friday.

“It is hard to overstate the importance of such a momentous event, one that laid the foundation for the current world order,” said Dr Jaishankar, addressing diplomats and dignitaries gathered to mark Victory Day.

Highlighting the Indian contribution to the Second World War, he noted the roles played by Indian troops across key theatres—from the Burma, North Africa, and Italy campaigns, to the Persian Corridor supporting the Soviet Union, and the treacherous air route over the Himalayas known as “The Hump.” “I am glad today, Ambassador, to see that the Russian Embassy specifically recognizes that effort through a plaque,” he added, referencing a commemorative installation unveiled during the ceremony.

Dr Jaishankar used the occasion to reflect on the broader changes that have reshaped the world in the eight decades since the war’s end. “As decolonization gathered pace, the membership of the United Nations has quadrupled. There has been a significant rebalancing of the global economy,” he said. “Today, we strive to create a more contemporary global system, especially through reformed multilateralism.” Touching on present-day challenges, he noted that India is currently confronting the scourge of terrorism. “This is a shared threat to the international community,” he stressed, thanking those countries that have expressed solidarity with India’s stance and its ongoing response. The minister closed on a forward-looking note, emphasising the continued relevance of cooperation. “Today is an occasion for hope and optimism, as also for remembrance,” he said. “It is an endorsement of our diplomatic endeavours, be they bilateral, regional, or multilateral.”
