Inclement weather disrupts surface, air traffic to Ladakh

Kargil, Sep 3: The normal life was affected in Kargil district due to the heavy rainfall since Tuesday. The Incessant rainfall for the past 24 hours,, has thrown normal life out of gear in Kargil. The mountains of Minamarg and Drass areas of the Kargil district received fresh layer of snowfall bringing a dip in the temperature. The Meteorological Department has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel, while the District Administration ordered closure of all schools for a day and urged residents to stay alert and contact the control room in case of emergencies. Police have also been making announcements asking people not to venture out, as the Kargil–Leh Highway remains closed due to the multiple landslides along the road.

Continuous rains triggered fresh landslides at Bajri Nallah on Zojila Pass on Wednesday , forcing the closure of the vital Srinagar-Leh highway and disrupting traffic between Kashmir and Ladakh. Officials said men and machinery have been pressed into service to clear the debris, but heavy rainfall is hampering the restoration work.

“The highway shall remain closed for vehicular movement till the clearance operation is completed,” they said

Delhi Airport on Wednesday issued a passenger advisory after inclement weather in Leh disrupted flight operations to the region. “Due to bad weather conditions in Leh, flight operations to the destination have been affected. We are working closely with all the stakeholders to support passengers and minimise inconvenience. For specific flight information, kindly contact the respective airline,” Delhi Airport said in a passenger advisory posted on social media platform X.
