Incessant rains trigger flood-like situation in Ganderbal

Ganderbal, Aug 27: Continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours has created a flood-like situation in several parts of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, raising water levels in almost all local water bodies, including Nallah Sindh.

Heavy rains triggered flash floods in some areas, washing away temporary footbridges. Locals reported that a makeshift bridge over Nallah Sindh in Rayil area of Tehsil Gund was swept away. Landslides at multiple spots along the Srinagar–Leh Highway also disrupted traffic movement.

In Baltal Sonamarg, flash floods struck the Neelgrath stream late Wednesday afternoon, submerging a camping site downstream. Authorities confirmed that the Sindh Nallah’s water level rose sharply soon after.

District officials said field staff have been directed to remain on high alert and assist people in vulnerable areas. The Ganderbal administration also issued a detailed advisory, cautioning residents and tourists to avoid riverbanks, streams, and flood-prone areas, and to stay away from slopes prone to landslides.
