Kangan, Sep 3: Incessant rainfall since Tuesday evening caused severe flood like situation in some areas of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district besides inundated some residential areas , however there was no loss of life or damage to property reported . The heavy rains caused the rise in water level of Nallah Sindh flowing through Ganderbal district creating panic among the people living nearby to the Nallah.

The flood like situation created panic among the inhabitants of several areas living adjacent to Nallah Sindh including Hariganiwan, Ramwari, Kullan , Rezan and other areas. Floodwaters inundated a Madrasa in Hariganiwan Kangan, while locals urged authorities to build protection walls along Nallah Sindh. The heavy flow of water damaged a portion of the newly constructed alternate road near Kijpora area of Kangan causing disruption in traffic. SSP Ganderbal Khalil Poswal along with SDM Kangan, SDPO Kangan and SHO Kangan inspected the spot to monitor the restoration work.

The district administration and Ganderbal police issued weather advisory and also helplines for general public amid the inclement weather conditions .

They advised people to stay away from river banks and streams and avoid going to forest and hilly areas . The water level of Nallah Sindh had crossed the flood declaration mark of 3.83 in the afternoon and was approaching the danger level. However in the evening the water level showed a gradual decline.

Executive engineer Flood and Irrigation Ganderbal, Nadeem Ahmad told Greater Kashmir that the water level in Nallah Sindh is decreasing since last few hours and the flood threat has subsided as of now. He said people shouldn’t panic but remain alert and contact control room for any assistance.  Meanwhile, the downpour, which began on Tuesday evening  continued till Wednesday afternoon, inundated residential areas and fields, affecting the normal life. Local residents while highlighting the ongoing issue of the area’s failed drainage system.
