A number of government schools are without proper buildings. The lack of space does affect the normal functioning of such schools. Some schools have old and unsafe buildings. While in some middle schools all the classes operate within three rooms because of the inadequate space.

In several schools, due to lack of space, some classes are taken in open, and in case of rough weather the classes are cancelled. And the precious time of the so tudents gets wasted. In some areas the construction of new buildings was started but the work was never completed. The buildings do not have windows or doors but schools have to function from there.

The concerned authorities have to address these serious problems. Statements are regularly being made regarding the measures taken for raising the standard of education in government schools. But there is an immediate need to look into the problem of lack of space in government schools. All schools must have proper and safe buildings.

This is the basic requirement. Besides classrooms, schools must have other facilities like safe  drinking water, washrooms etc. Wherever required the schools have to provided laboratory and library too. For last several years a campaign has been launched to motivate parents to send their kids to government schools.

It is a good initiative and needs to be carried forward. But such efforts can succeed if the schools have proper infrastructure, other related facilities, and the required teaching staff. If such  facilities are unavailable then the chances of the success of the efforts to persuade parents to send their children to government schools become grim.

In absence of all this, the roll of students gets reduced with time. We have seen many government schools almost emptying in terms of students rolls. A number of such schools were merged with other schools in the past. If the roll continues to decrease, more schools will have to be merged in future.

To save government schools meeting such a fate, there is an urgent need to arrange enough space in these schools and ensure that all the facilities are provided to the students in these schools.
