SKIMS, now the premier health institution of Jammu & Kashmir was established with three objectives of Patient Care , Research and the Academics. Only years after it earned the reputation of a tertiary healthcare institution with best patient care services.

Best administrators like Dr. A. K Nagpal and world reputed medicos like Prof. Abdul Ahad Guroo, Prof. M.S Khuru were followed with many other distinguished doctors, whose services added glory to the institution through their excellent performances in the field of patient care.

It is this institution now which has been providing relief to people in general and poor patients in particular who otherwise were undergoing trauma, financial burdens and other hardships in search of treatment outside J&K. The institution became hope, more for the poor and soon became a household name. It also formed part of an identity and developed deep sense of ownership, which people in general started taking pride in.

Over the years the institution evolved as centre of excellence providing excellent patient care, and  services at multiple layers. From complex procedures to kidney transplants, rare & high end surgeries to high impact research published in world class medical journals, the institute is contributing to patient care, medical education through excellent human resource.

Despite witnessing set back during militancy the institution never stopped performing. The contribution came from stalwarts like Dr. S. Jalal who could bring the institution out of morass.
Every administration worked on the core objective of patient care, research and academics.

The SKIMS became Deemed Medical University running various academic courses in various advanced specialisations. Besides, the Deemed University is conducting various courses in paramedic sciences contributing to human resource in health & medical education. Every administration tried hard to achieve excellence. There might be limitations but effort was constant. It would be unfair if we don't give due credit to administrators like Showkat A Zargar, Dr. A. G Ahangar and Dr. Omar Javed Shah who through their administrative skills tried to foster a change in the functioning and working of SKIMS.

These stalwarts tried their best and left no stone unturned to gear up the patient care. Despite each of them faced their share of criticism. The criticism though never became a hurdle in its functioning which can be gauged through various medical feats achieved by its leading faculty/ medicos/ nurses/ administrators. The good work doesn't get overshadowed by criticism rather it further pushes you to excel. The patient care management is a Herculean task but conviction and commitment of each employee is making it easy.

All these achievements don't make one complacent. The best is yet to come. The current administration is on its toes to ensure basic services are provided to the poor patients. Every effort is directed towards efficient patient care management. The patient care is the only focus and the service to mankind is the only motto.
