In run-up to Ramadhan, Koker Bazar draws crowds for dates

Srinagar, Mar 10:  Koker Bazar market in the city’s commercial hub Lal Chowk is witnessing buzz as people are thronging it to purchase dates, dry fruits, and essential items in run-up to the holy month of Ramadhan.

Koker Bazar market’s vibrant shops, packed with different types of dates and items, attract both residents and tourists in Srinagar. As Ramadhan will begin on Tuesday, the market is witnessing good footfall of customers.

Abdul Rehman, a veteran shopkeeper known for his expertise in providing Ramadhan essentials, emphasised the importance of preparing for the upcoming holy month. "We're ensuring a sufficient supply of dates and other essential items in our store." Apart from dates, he highlighted the significance of stocking up on items like spices, grains, and traditional Ramadhan foods.

According to him, these preparations are vital to meet the needs of customers observing fast and to uphold the Ramadhan spirit within the community.

During Ramadhan, there is a high demand for dates. People rely on dates as a staple food item during this month because these provide instant energy and nutrition after breaking the day-long fast.

Muhammed Iqbal, a customer, explained, "In Ramadhan, dates and dry fruits are really popular because people want to eat well and make delicious sweets and drinks. During this holy month, from sunset to sunrise, people don't eat or drink anything because of fasting. So, when it's time to break the fast, they prepare tasty meals and desserts like biryani, sweet drinks, noodles, rice pudding, and sweet treats like Firini and Halwa."

Different kinds of dates are commonly sold in Srinagar ranging from expensive to more affordable options. Some popular ones include Ajwa, Mabroom, Kalmi, Sudayi, Sukhri, Amber, and Medjol.

Additionally, there are other varieties of dates available each with its unique taste and price, such as Zahidi, Khadrawy, and Deglet Noor.

Khazir Muhammad from the Pampore area in south Kashmir said, "I come to Srinagar to buy dates because they have many types, and I can find the ones I like at good prices. The dates here are fresh and tasty, and the sellers are friendly.

It's always a pleasant experience shopping for dates in Srinagar. Besides, the atmosphere in the market is lively, and I enjoy chatting with other customers while picking out my favorite dates," he added.
