In display of political grace, Omar Abdullah gives emotional farewell to former ally-turned-rival
Srinagar, Nov 2: Setting an example of compassion beyond political divides, Omar Abdullah bid a poignant farewell to Devender Singh Rana, his long-time associate turned political rival.
Despite being on the opposite sides of the political spectrum after Rana joined the BJP, Omar, in a show of political grace, visited the grieving family in Jammu, reflecting on the cherished memories and fun times that endured beyond their differences.
The long and close political and personal association of Omar Abdullah and senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana, who passed away on Thursday, was well known. So was some kind of natural political bitterness when differences occurred between the two and Rana left the National Conference (NC) to join the BJP.
Being poles apart politically, differences of opinion and subsequent statements on political lines from the two sides were bound to occur. As Rana passed away, Omar left behind the bitterness of the past, rushed to Jammu to visit the bereaved family to offer his heartfelt condolences, and pay last respects to his erstwhile close lieutenant and attend his last rites.
He posted on X, "The terrible news from late last night isn't really sinking in. I know the last few years have been marked by our differences, Devender but I prefer to focus on the fun times we shared together, the excellent work we did together and the memories. You have been taken from us all too soon and will be missed. May your soul rest in peace now DSR. My heart goes out to your family as I struggle to find the words to convey my condolences to them."
The Chief Minister also shared his pictures with Rana and others taken in 2009.
Earlier, some years back, Rana had also visited the bereaved Abdullahs when their close relative had passed away. He too used to pay such visits to other people and also to offer condolences ignoring the political differences.
NC President Farooq Abdullah in his condolence message on the demise of Rana also recalled the close association of his father Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah with Rana's father, Rajinder Singh Rana, retired Chief Engineer. He also affectionately talked about his association and that of Omar Abdullah with Rana. He said that the departed leader played an important role to the best of his ability to strengthen NC.
Farooq Abdullah said that after Rana joined BJP they (Abdullahs) did not say anything bad about him.
Rana’s demise was widely condoled across the political, media, social and business circles.
