IGP Kashmir calls for vigilance ahead of Amarnath Yatra

Srinagar, June 25: As the annual Amarnath Yatra commences on June 29 from the twin routes of Baltal in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district and Pahalgam in Anantnag district, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vidhi Kumar Birdi Tuesday urged all officers to remain vigilant and proactive in their duties.

During a meeting held at the Police Control Room (PCR), Kashmir, on Monday, V K Birdi reviewed the arrangements for the peaceful conduct of the Amarnath Yatra.

He emphasised the need to strengthen the security grid and keep a close watch on Anti-National Elements (ANEs) and terrorist associates by generating actionable intelligence.

The Kashmir police chief underscored the importance of coordination and timely response to any potential threats, directing all officers to remain vigilant and proactive.

The meeting saw the attendance of senior Police officials, including the DIG Central Kashmir Range, DIG North Kashmir Range, DIG South Kashmir Range, all district Senior Superintendents of Police of Kashmir Zone, SSP Traffic City, SSP Traffic Rural, SSP Security, SSP APCR, and SP Telecommunication.

At the outset, participating officers presented a PowerPoint presentation detailing the security plan and specific requirements for their respective districts.

The security arrangements for the smooth conduct of Amarnath Yatra 2024 were also discussed.

The IGP Kashmir closely examined the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) formulated for coordinating security efforts and ensuring a unified approach in managing operational, natural, and manmade disasters.

He emphasised the importance of the safe and secure movement of yatris as a top priority, reviewing the deployment and operational readiness of the Road Opening Parties.

The IGP Kashmir stressed the need for vigilant patrolling and monitoring along highways.

Night dominations were highlighted as crucial to prevent any untoward incidents, and the IGP Kashmir reviewed the schedule and cutoff timings for vehicle-bound and foot yatris to maintain a structured and secure flow along the designated routes.

To ensure the effectiveness of security measures, the IGP Kashmir directed the conduct of mock drills based on SOPs to identify areas for improvement.

He also instructed DIG South Kashmir Range (SKR) and DIG Central Kashmir Range (CKR) to assess High-Density Counter Operation Plans in their zones for comprehensive security coverage and timely response to potential threats.

Robust security measures at all camping sites were emphasised, including the installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations.

Adequate manpower at each yatra camp was also stressed.

The meeting concluded with IGP Kashmir expressing confidence in the Police’s capabilities to provide a safe, smooth, and secure environment for the yatra, ensuring that yatris can undertake their spiritual journey with peace of mind.
