Jammu, Jul 9: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu zone, Bhim Sen Tuti Wednesday chaired a review meeting at zonal Police Headquarters Jammu to review the implementation of the newly enacted criminal laws, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).

The IGP stressed the importance of a smooth and uniform rollout of the new legal framework and directed all districts to step up capacity building of SHOs, IOs, and court staff. Officers were instructed to conduct awareness drives for legal and field units, ensure procedural compliance, and maintain performance dashboards for regular monitoring.

Highlighting key provisions, IGP noted that the reforms focussed on victim-centric justice, speedy investigations, and digital transparency. He emphasized on the liberal use of provisions and tools such as e-FIR, e-Summons and e-Sakshya.

Officers were briefed on the correct application of BNSS provisions, including 60 or 90-day charge sheet deadlines, property restoration under Section 107, and trial in absentia provisions under Section 356.

District-wise performance metrics were also reviewed. Ramban, Kishtwar, and Udhampur showed commendable adherence to charge sheet timelines, while Kishtwar recorded 100 percent compliance in FSL visits mandated for cases punishable over 7 years.

The meeting also reviewed adoption of digital tools like e-Summons, e-Sakshya, and MedLeaPR, with Jammu, Udhampur, and Rajouri emerging as strong performers. The effective use of Section 107 BNSS in Jammu and Udhampur was acknowledged.

Officers were advised to prioritize community service orders and maximize use of trial in absentia where applicable.
