Ice-skating point at Basgo Leh closed to public amid rising temperature

Kargil, Jan 31: The district administration in Leh has ordered the closure of the frozen river belt at Basgo, in Leh district, commonly used for ice-skating, to the general public.

The decision has been taken in view of rising temperatures and as a precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incidents.

Officials stated that any violation of the order will result in punitive actions under relevant Disaster Management Acts rules, as instructed by the Chairman of DDMA Leh.

An order issued by the District Magistrate Leh, Santosh Sukhadeve, who also serves as the Chairman of District Disaster Management Authority Leh, highlighted the report received from the Naib Tehsildar, Basgo, indicating the large numbers of ice skaters/public congregating at the Ice Skating point, Basgo.

Concerns were raised due to the rise in temperature, which poses a risk of the ice formation collapsing at any moment, potentially resulting in loss of lives and property.

"As Chairman of District Disaster Management Authority, Leh, I hereby order the immediate closure of the Ice Skating Point and restrict public/skaters' access to the Ice Skating point, Basgo. Any violation of the above Order shall invite punitive actions under relevant Disaster Management Act rules," the order further stated.
