Srinagar, Nov 3: A delegation of ten media professionals from Hyderabad gained firsthand insight into Kashmir's renowned Kani shawl weaving tradition during their visit to a Common Facilitation Centre in Kanihama, Budgam district, marking the beginning of their week-long Kashmir tour.

The media team, led by Dr. Manas Krishnakanth, Deputy Director of Press Information Bureau (PIB) Hyderabad, witnessed the intricate craftsmanship behind the creation of Kashmir's prestigious Kani shawls. The visit was organised by PIB Hyderabad under its Media Outreach Programme to showcase various central government initiatives in the region.

During their visit to the facilitation centre, the delegation learned about the GI (Geographical Indication) tagging system introduced by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This initiative has emerged as a crucial tool in preserving traditional craftsmanship while ensuring authenticity and quality for buyers.

Master artisan Sajad Kanihami demonstrated the meticulous process of Kani shawl weaving and highlighted various government support measures, including GI tagging and the establishment of Common Facilitation Centres, aimed at promoting and preserving this centuries-old craft.

The delegation was accompanied by Qazi Salman, Joint Director PIB Srinagar, along with other PIB Srinagar officials. Their seven-day tour will showcase various central government initiatives across the region.
