Hybrid procedure saved patient with rare, life-threatening abdominal condition: Paras Health

Srinagar, Jun 11: Paras Health Srinagar has successfully performed a groundbreaking, life-saving intervention on a 45-year-old patient suffering from Acute Mesenteric Ischemia (AMI), marking a first-of-its-kind medical achievement in Jammu & Kashmir. The case involved a rare combination of Endovascular Stenting, Mechanical Thrombectomy, and Surgical Management—executed through coordinated, multidisciplinary teamwork.

In a statement Paras Health Srinagar said that led by Dr. Irshad Ahmad Banday (Interventional Radiologist) and Dr. Ishaq Nabi (General Surgeon), with support from the Departments of Radiology, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, and Critical Care, the intervention saved a life that was initially at risk due to misdiagnosis and delayed presentation.

The patient, with no prior vascular disease or diabetes, was initially treated for gastritis at another institution. As symptoms worsened, including severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and rectal bleeding, he arrived at Paras Health Srinagar. A timely CECT abdomen revealed a dissection of the Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) with complete distal thrombotic occlusion.

Acting within a critical four-hour window, the medical team performed an emergency endovascular procedure. A balloon-mounted stent was placed at the SMA dissection site, and a Penumbra device was used for manual thrombectomy. Blood flow was fully restored, as confirmed by a post-procedure angiogram.

A follow-up laparoscopy confirmed bowel viability, and the patient was monitored in the Surgical ICU before being discharged on the seventh day in stable condition. A repeat scan showed complete resolution of the ischemia.

“This case sets a benchmark in emergency vascular and surgical care for the region,” said Dr. Irshad Ahmad Banday. “Timely diagnosis and rapid intervention were key.”

Dr. Ishaq Nabi noted, “AMI has a high mortality rate. Through clinical vigilance and coordinated care, we managed to turn the odds.”

This success was made possible through the combined efforts of Emergency, Anesthesia (Dr. Nasir), Critical Care (Dr. Imran), Cardiology (Dr. Fayaz and Dr. Suhail Maqbool), Radiology, and Dietary Services. Paras Health Srinagar reaffirmed its commitment to advancing hybrid and minimally invasive emergency care in the region.
