Hundreds attend Independence Day celebrations across Kashmir
Srinagar, Aug 15: Independence Day was celebrated with enthusiasm across Kashmir on Friday with hundreds people thronging to venues to witness hosting flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances, and patriotic events.
The largest gathering took place at Srinagar’s iconic Bakshi Stadium, where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah unfurled the national flag and addressed a cheering crowd of thousands.
The stadium was abuzz with activity from early morning as students, teachers, government officials, and locals poured in to witness the celebrations. A sea of tricolour flags marked the occasion, highlighting the diversity and unity of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a break from previous years, this year’s celebrations were open to all, with no restrictions on movement. Identity cards were accepted as valid entry passes at all major venues, a move that was widely appreciated by the public.
“This year felt different,” said Faisal Ahmad, a college student from downtown Srinagar. “The celebrations were open and welcoming. We didn’t have to go through excessive security checks, and the energy in the stadium was infectious.”
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, after hoisting the national flag, delivered a passionate speech calling for peace, unity, and progress in J&K.
Children from various schools across the Valley took part in parades and plays depicting India’s freedom struggle and cultural richness. The participation of school students added colour and vibrancy to the event.
Nazima Bano, a teacher who accompanied a group of students to Bakshi Stadium, said, “It’s heartening to see our young generation participate with such enthusiasm. Events like this help nurture a sense of unity and pride in our shared heritage.”
Local artists also showcased Kashmiri folk music and dance forms, adding a cultural flair to the celebrations. Meanwhile, across district headquarters like Anantnag, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Pulwama, similar events were organized by local administrations, drawing large crowds and peaceful participation.
Security arrangements remained tight but unobtrusive, and the day passed off peacefully across the Valley. The peaceful and inclusive nature of this year’s Independence Day events was seen as a positive sign by many. “I’ve attended these events in the past, but today’s celebration had a different feel. It was peaceful, joyful, and full of hope,” said Shabir Lone, a local shopkeeper from Budgam.
Meanwhile, an official statement issued here said that I-Day functions were held at Pulwama, Kulgam, Kupwara, subdivision Handwara, Lolab & Karnah, besides at tehsils, block Headquarters, Panchayats, Government offices and Education institutions of the district where the National Flag was hoisted by the heads of the institutions.
