Huge Muharram procession taken out in Srinagar

Srinagar, July 14: A massive Muharram procession was taken out in the old city of Srinagar on Sunday with the participation of hundreds of mourners. Meanwhile, measures have been put in place for the 8th Muharram procession to be taken out on Monday.

Sunday’s procession marks the beginning of a series of events as the Shia community observes the sacred month of Muharram.

The procession commenced from Kathi Darwaza Raja Mohalla and made its way to Hassanabad Imam Bargah, with participants expressing grief and paying homage to the martyrs of Karbala.

The event was marked by the rhythmic beating of chests, the recitation of elegies, and the carrying of traditional banners and flags symbolising the sacrifices made by Imam Hussain (AS) and his followers.

This is a significant development as it is the second time in three decades that the 8th Muharram procession would be allowed.
