Srinagar, May 12: Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari today appealed the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene and ensure free and fair parliamentary polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

Talking to media persons, Bukhari stated that impartial polls are very important for flourishing of the democracy.

He alleged that large number of his party workers and agents have been arrested ahead of the polling in Srinagar parliamentary constituency. Bukhari expressed serious concern over the arrests and demanded an end to it. He also urged for immediate release of all the arrested persons.

“ The arrest of large number of Apni Party workers and agents ahead of the polling is a blatant attempt to manipulate elections,” Bukhari said.

He alleged that the arrests are being made on the behest of National Conference and PDP. Bukhari stated that the two parties are in hand in glove with some elements in administration and targeting Apni Party workers. “ NC and PDP have got frustrated due to the support , Apni Party is getting from public. We urge the administration to provide a level play field to other parties as well,” he said..

The Apni Party President alleged that the workers have been arrested c in various parts of Srinagar, Budgam, Pulwama and Shopian.

Earlier party General Secretary Rafi Ahmad Mir in a statement cautioned that if the party workers are not released immediately, the Apni Party may choose to boycott the elections. He said, “The democratic process should be free and fair. The arrest of party workers mere hours before the polls suggests a blatant attempt to manipulate and rig the elections against the Apni Party. We will not tolerate this injustice, and go to boycott the polls.”
