Jammu, Jun 10: Taking a swift call in alignment with the assertion of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the whole nation was standing in unison with cross border shelling victims of J&K, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has allocated Rs 25 Cr to rebuild 2060 damaged houses in J&K. This will be additional provision sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in consonance with the announcement of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, during his maiden visit to J&K, post “Operation Sindoor”, while addressing the gathering at Katra after dedicating Udhampur-Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation.

While referring to sufferings of border residents due to cross border shelling by “frustrated Pakistan”, post “Operation Sindoor” scenario, the Prime Minister asserted that the whole nation was sharing the pain of cross border shelling victims. PM Modi had stated that Pakistan was left in shock post “Operation Sindoor” and in frustration, it (Pakistan) reacted by targeting innocent civilians in Jammu, Poonch, and other districts.

“The world witnessed how it destroyed homes, bombed schools and hospitals, and shelled temples, mosques, and gurudwaras,” PM Modi said while praising the resilience of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Recognizing the hardship faced by over 2,000 families affected by shelling, PM Modi affirmed that their pain was the nation's pain.

“The families, which lost loved ones due to cross-border firing, have already received appointment letters for government assistance. Financial aid was previously provided for home repairs, ensuring relief for those impacted. The central government has now decided to enhance this support, offering greater assistance to affected families. The households suffering severe damage will now receive Rs 2 lakh, while partially damaged homes will be granted Rs 1 lakh in additional assistance, beyond the support already provided earlier,” the Prime Minister had announced, adding that the government recognized border residents as the nation's frontline protectors.

With in three days, following the announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding additional compensation for houses damaged in border areas, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in pro-active mode, on June 9 facilitated an additional provision of Rs 25 Cr from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for 2,060 houses in J&K, thus ensuring swift implementation of the decision. Similar compensation would also be provided in the border areas of Punjab, it was stated. Notably, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah too had visited Poonch on May 29 and 30, 2025. During the visit, he handed over appointment letters on compassionate grounds to the family members of those who lost their lives due to cross-border firing.
