Historic Hari Singh High Street market cries for revival

Srinagar, Nov 22: Traders of the historic Hari Singh High Street Market in Srinagar have voiced concerns over critical issues plaguing the economic hub, calling for urgent government intervention.

Citing the market’s heritage and economic importance, the traders highlighted the neglect it has faced, particularly in relation to the Smart City initiative, and proposed actionable solutions to revitalise the area. 

President, Hari Singh High Street Traders’ Association, Arif Kadeem said "Despite being one of Srinagar’s most important heritage and business hubs, our market has been excluded from the Smart City initiative."

"This exclusion has left us without essential infrastructure upgrades, pushing us behind other areas in terms of development." 

The traders pointed out that while modernization efforts, like underground cabling, had been initiated, they remain incomplete, leading to damaged roads and pathways. "The incomplete work has created more problems than solutions," they added. 

One of the traders' primary grievances is the lack of organized parking facilities, which they say deters customers and disrupts business. "There’s enough space to develop paid parking facilities that could benefit both customers and the government by generating revenue," said Altaf Trumboo 

The traders proposed auctioning one side of the road adjacent to the market for managed parking. "This solution is simple and practical, yet the authorities have taken no steps to address it," they stated. 

 Highlighting the absence of functional streetlights, traders noted that the issue has persisted for an extended period without any action from the concerned department. "A well-lit market is not just about aesthetics—it’s about safety and a welcoming environment for shoppers," said Usman Fazal, a businessman at HSHS. 

The traders have urged the government to include the market in the Smart City initiative, citing the need for modern street lighting, improved drainage systems, and the implementation of smart technologies. 

"We need this intervention to ensure the survival and prosperity of this historic. market Hari Singh High Street deserves its rightful place in Srinagar’s Smart City project." 

The traders are optimistic that with government support, the market can regain its former glory. "We trust the administration will hear our plea and take immediate steps to address our concerns. This market is not just a business hub; it’s part of Srinagar’s identity."
