High-velocity winds sweep across Jammu, Samba
Jammu, June 3: Strong wind storm swept across several parts of Jammu and Samba districts on Monday, causing extensive damage to power infrastructure, and disrupting electricity supply in many areas.
Gusty winds, followed by slight showers, damaged power transmission lines and other installations. Trees and electric poles were uprooted in many areas, with the impact of the thunder-storm. At Bawe Wali Gali, a communication tower also collapsed.
As soon as high-velocity winds hit these areas around 5.45 pm or so, power supply was the first casualty.
Bari Brahmana, Vijaypur, Bishnah, Sainik Colony, Gandhi Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Bakshi Nagar, Rehari, Rajpura, Shakti Nagar, Roop Nagar, Janipur, Muthi and adjoining areas experienced total power outage.
Power Development Department (PDD) officials said that the attempts were underway to resume power.
By 11 pm, while power supply to some areas was restored, Gandhi Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Bari Brahmana, Bishnah, Sainik Colony among several other areas were still reeling under darkness.
With regard to damage to power infrastructure across Jammu, Superintending Engineer Karam Chand, while speaking to the media, said, “We are still assessing losses caused to power infrastructure due to high-velocity winds.”
