Srinagar, Dec 21: After weeks of a prolonged dry spell, Srinagar received fresh rainfall on Sunday, bringing much-needed relief to residents who had been eagerly awaiting precipitation.

As predicted by the Meteorological Department, the wet spell marked an end to the dry conditions that had prevailed across the Valley, even as higher reaches received fresh snowfall.

In the summer capital, however, the precipitation so far remained in the form of rain. While people across the city welcomed the rainfall, they said normal life was thrown out of gear as wet conditions, low visibility, and traffic congestion caused inconvenience to commuters. From early morning, foggy weather conditions prevailed in several areas, forcing motorists to switch on fog lights to navigate safely through the city roads.

“Visibility was very low at many places, especially during the morning hours. Driving was risky, and we had to move slowly with fog lights on,” said a commuter near Hazratbal.

Commuters said that slippery roads and waterlogging added to the woes of two-wheeler operators, many of whom were seen struggling to maintain balance. The Nowpora area of Srinagar witnessed massive waterlogging due to a defunct drainage system and numerous potholes.

Despite it being Sunday, traffic jams were witnessed in many areas during peak hours. As per the usual Sunday tradition, large numbers of people headed towards the popular Sunday Market despite disruptions.

The rainfall also affected trading activity at the market, though business did not come to a complete halt. Vendors were seen hurriedly setting up large umbrellas and plastic covers to shield themselves and their merchandise from the rain.

“Business was slightly affected due to the rain, but there was still good demand for winter clothing,” said a vendor at the Sunday Market.

Shoppers echoed similar sentiments. “We were happy when the rains finally arrived, as the dry spell had become uncomfortable. But moving around in the rain, especially using public transport, was difficult due to slippery roads and traffic,” said Irfan Ahmad, a shopper.

Commuters also raised concerns about potholes and open manholes in various parts of the city, saying these pose serious risks during rainfall. “During such weather, potholes and uncovered manholes become dangerous, especially when visibility is poor,” Afnan Ahmad, a commuter, said.

Meanwhile, officials from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation said that preparations have been put in place in view of the forecast of further precipitation. An SMC official said snow clearance machinery has been kept ready, and a list of emergency contact numbers of ward officers has been issued so that residents can report grievances for prompt redressal.

“We are prepared for any eventuality, and a whole list of officers, including ward officers with contact details, has been issued. People can also reach out to their respective ward officers and other ground personnel in case of any need,” the official said.
