Heavy rainfall triggers flash floods, landslides in Pir Panjal; traffic hit

Rajouri, Aug 18: Amid constant rainfall in Rajouri and Poonch districts of the Pir Panjal region, river bodies are in full spate, triggering panic among locals. The continuous downpour has pushed several water bodies to the danger mark, with the Suktoh River reported to be in a heavily flooded stage.

Officials said that in different parts of Rajouri and Poonch, heavy rainfall was recorded throughout the day, leaving large areas in flood-like conditions.

Officials said that the rising water levels are posing a grave risk to life and property, with residents expressing fear over the situation.

The Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch National Highway was partially affected after a landslide occurred at Niali in Manjakote.

Along with a portion of sand, heavy boulders rolled onto the highway, disrupting traffic movement.

Officials confirmed that clearance work was underway to restore full connectivity.

Besides the highway, many other roads across the twin districts have been closed due to landslides and waterlogging, leaving several areas cut off.

In Poonch town, floodwater after the heavy rainfall caused serious water-logging problems.

In Mendhar, Poonch to Mendhar road via Suka Katha remained closed for the movement of vehicles for at least two hours, putting people in trouble.

In Poonch town areas, streets and residential areas were submerged, leading to widespread damage to property and severe inconvenience to the local population.
