Heated exchange in J&K assembly over GMC Handwara relocation
Jammu, March 11: A heated exchange was witnessed in the Assembly on Tuesday over the relocation of the GMC, Handwara.
During the Question Hour on Monday in the Assembly, a heated debate erupted over the relocation of GMC Handwara.
MLA Handwara, Sajad Lone, raised concerns, sparking a verbal clash with Minister for Health and Education, Sakina Itoo.
The Minister defended the relocation, citing flood risks at the current site, while Lone countered that no alternative land was available.
He also accused the Minister of contradicting her previous statements, to which she responded, “My reply remains unchanged.”
MLA Trehgam, Saifullah Mir, insisted adequate land was available, while AIP legislator Sheikh Khursheed attempted to move toward the front in protest.
Amid the escalating exchange, the Minister stated that if the House assured the site's safety, construction would proceed.
She also said that an inquiry would be held into why land near a river was initially chosen, leading to potential financial waste.
The Minister further informed the House that she had written to the Government of India regarding the issue.
PDP MLA Fayaz Mir emphasized that all parties were united in ensuring the project’s completion.
The Speaker advised coordination with all stakeholders to resolve the matter.
