Shopian, Nov 3: Residents of several localities in Shopian town and adjoining areas have expressed strong resentment over the supply of muddy and contaminated water, particularly during rains, saying the problem has persisted for years and poses serious health hazards.

“As soon as it rains, water taps gush out mud instead of clean water,” said Abdul Rashid, a resident of Bonabazar.

“We have no option but to either boil the water or buy bottled water for drinking.”

Locals from Heragam, Bonabazar, Dal Mohalla, Kanipora, and nearby areas said the problem worsens after every rainfall, rendering the water unfit for consumption. They blamed the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department for poor filtration facilities and lack of maintenance.

“Despite repeated complaints, no concrete action has been taken. The filtration plants are outdated and need urgent repairs,” said another resident.

The residents have urged the authorities to ensure the supply of clean and safe drinking water and to upgrade the filtration system. They have also demanded regular quality checks to prevent health risks.

When contacted, Abdul Rashid, Executive Engineer, Jal Shakti Department Shopian, said that the filtration plant in the area is being augmented. “The department supplies filtered water to consumers and is also replacing worn-out pipes in the town under the Amrut 2.0 scheme,” he added.
