Health officials in Baramulla asked to curb cold-related illnesses

Baramulla, Dec 14: The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Baramulla has issued a circular to address the potential impacts of a harsh winter that has been predicted up ahead.

The circular has been issued following advisories issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) that the “La Niña” effect may result in severe cold wave, heavy snowfall, and frost in the region.

The circular highlights the district’s vulnerability, particularly for women, the elderly, and other at-risk groups, and mandates proactive measures by healthcare authorities to mitigate the effects of the anticipated extreme weather conditions.

As per circular, the Block Medical Officers (BMOs) have been directed to conduct immediate surveys to identify vulnerable individuals, particularly elderly citizens and women, within their respective jurisdictions. The BMOs have been directed to compile a database of such individuals and submit it to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Baramulla within 10 days.

Additionally, the circular stressed the readiness of healthcare facilities, instructing BMOs to ensure hospitals are well-stocked with essential medicines to treat illnesses caused by cold and frostbites.

“The hospitals are expected to treat such cases as a priority to prevent casualties,” reads the circular.

The Chief Medical Officer Baramulla and the Medical Superintendent of Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla have been tasked with maintaining records of any casualties caused by the cold wave and submitting regular updates to the DDMA without delay.

“In order to ensure proper coordination among the district officials, the Tehsildars across the district are instructed to work closely with BMOs to implement necessary arrangements and report any casualties,” reads the circular.

The District Information Officer Baramulla has been directed to disseminate this information through print and electronic media, ensuring public awareness about the preparedness measures.
