Kulgam, Dec 8: In a surprise visit to District Hospital Kulgam, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Masood Itoo took immediate action against healthcare professionals found 'neglecting their duties'.

The unannounced inspection, conducted at 7 PM, found that three on-duty doctors were absent. Consequently, the Minister ordered their immediate suspension, said an official.

Paramedic staff assigned to the operation theatre, who were also absent during the visit, faced similar disciplinary action, he said.

She assured the staff that the government would work to strengthen the hospital by addressing staffing shortages and ensuring that medical professionals are available to meet the needs of the community.

The Minister also interacted with patients and their attendants to get direct feedback on the quality of care provided.

Many patients expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of basic facilities, including unclean washrooms.

The Minister acknowledged these complaints and promised immediate action.

"The complaints regarding unclean washrooms and inadequate facilities are valid. I have also learned that the operation theatre remains closed on Sundays, which is unacceptable. These issues will be addressed promptly with the Director of Health Services," she said.

Minister Itoo emphasized that the Omar Abdullah-led government is committed to delivering world-class healthcare services to residents in their localities.

She assured the public that the hospital's infrastructure and facilities would be upgraded to reduce the need for patients to seek treatment outside the district.

"We are committed to ensuring that healthcare services in Kulgam are improved significantly. Patients should not have to leave their district for basic medical needs," she said.
