Handwara girl qualifies for National Wushu Championship

Kupwara, Nov 23: In the quiet village of Chogal Handwara, 14-year-old Mehvish Rashid stood out for her dedication and passion for Wushu.

A student at AIIMS Handwara, she balanced her studies and training at the Khelo India Wushu Centre in Handwara with remarkable determination.

Her parents, though of modest means, were her strongest supporters. The 21 RR and the Khelo India programme also guided and encouraged and helped her to pursue her dreams.

In November, Mehvish participated in the trials for the 24th Sub-Junior National Wushu Championship at MA Stadium, Jammu. Competing against many talented athletes, she showcased her skills with precision and confidence. Her hard work paid off, and she earned her spot in the prestigious event to be held in Tarntaran, Punjab.

Her selection brought pride and joy to her family and the entire village. Yet, Mehvish remained humble, knowing this was just the beginning. Her dream was not only to win medals but also to inspire other children to follow their passions.

Mehvish’s story is one of perseverance, hard work, and the power of support. It proves that with determination, even the biggest dreams can come true.

Mehvish in her message to girls said that one should not shy away from playing games. “Earlier girls would be shy to participate in games but now the world has changed and most importantly if taken seriously one can earn a great name and fame in any sort of games,” she said.
