Handwara area faces drinking water scarcity

Residents of Krumhora in north Kashmir’s Handwara have complained that the area has been without potable drinking water for the last several years and the concerned department was not taking any concrete steps to meet the demand of locals.

The residents told Greater Kashmir that they used to get water from the Parinag Nagradi scheme but due to the non serious attitude of the concerned department, the scheme turned non functional leaving inhabitants at God's mercy. Later locals constructed wells on their own to meet the need of drinking water but due to the prevailing dry spell all the wells have dried up in the village.

"We pay Rs 500 rupees to fetch a water tanker from Nagradi some two kms away from our village" said, a local.

Locals said that from Deputy Commissioner Kupwara to the concerned department they have knocked at every door but to no avail.

The residents have appealed to authorities to redress their genuine grievances by providing them drinking water at the earliest.

Meanwhile a senior official at Jal Shakti Department Division Handwara told Greater Kashmir that the village is supposed to get drinking water from a newly laid scheme. He said that due to a local dispute, water could not be provided to Krumhora village, however, he said that they were trying to settle the issue.
