Kargil, Nov 16: Eminent poet and scholar of Kargil, Haji Khwaja Abdul Hamid Tanveer, passed away on Saturday at the age of 84.

Haji Tanveer was a widely respected scholar and a well known poet of Ladakh. His demise has been widely condoled across the Ladakh UT. The Leitunent Governor of Ladakh Brig BD Mishra expressed grief over his passing away . “ I am deeply saddened to know about the demise of Haji Abdul Hameed Tanveer, a renowned poet, historian and educationist from Kargil. His departure has left a vaccum in literature, history and education in Ladakh. His contribution in these fields will always be remembered,” the LG Ladakh said.

MP Ladakh Mohammed Haneefa also condoled the demise. “ Heartbroken to learn about the passing of Haji Abdul Hameed Tanveer, Kargil’s esteemed poet, historian, and educationist. His immense contributions to literature, history, and education will forever be remembered. May Allah bless him with Jannah and comfort his family during this time of grief,” MP said.

Chief Executive Councillor LAHDC Kargil Dr Jaffar Akhoon also condoled the demise of the eminent poet . Meanwhile, a condolence meeting was held today at Ladakh Cultural Academy Hall, Kargil, in memory of Haji Tanveer. The condolence meeting united Kargil’s literary and cultural community, including renowned writers, poets, and cultural activists, who came together to pay profound respects and extend heartfelt condolences on the loss of this iconic literary figure. He was remembered for his immense contributions to literature and culture. Known as an “ocean of knowledge,” his prose and poetry were celebrated for their depth, wisdom, and literary craftsmanship. His work left a lasting impact on Kargil’s cultural identity, inspiring both his contemporaries and the young generation. The attendees honoured the late scholar’s memory with a solemn two-minute silence, and “Surah-e-Fatiha” was recited to pray for the departed soul.
