Govt to establish Canoeing, Kayaking institution at Manasbal Lake: Advisor to CM

Srinagar, Nov 17: Advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Nasir Aslam Wani, Sunday said, the government will open a canoeing and kayaking institution at Manasbal.

Highlighting the growing inclination towards adventure sports in Kashmir, Wani said the trend underscores Kashmir's potential to host international adventure sports competitions.

Wani noted that recent events combining activities such as hiking, running, swimming, canoeing, and cycling attracted good participation from both local and foreign athletes.

"These multi-activity sports are not only adventurous but also a test of endurance, as participants engage in continuous activities for up to 48 hours," Wani told news agency KNS.

"Kashmir offers an excellent environment for adventure sports. The blend of mountains, rivers, and open spaces presents immense opportunities for organizing such events," he added.

The advisor also shared plans to host a large-scale adventure sports event in Kashmir next June, with the aim of replicating the success of international competitions. "Our team heading to Malaysia is proof of the potential of Kashmiri athletes. We hope they return with a win," he said.

Wani further stressed the need to improve infrastructure and training facilities for adventure sports in the valley. He mentioned the revival of water sports units under the Sports Authority of India, which will provide specialized coaches and equipment.

"These facilities will ensure that our youth have the opportunity to learn and excel in various adventure sports," he remarked.
