Srinagar, Aug 07: Weavers Service Centre Srinagar, Union Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir today celebrated the 10th National Handloom Day at Kashmir Haat Srinagar.

Commissioner Secretary Industries and Commerce, Vikramjit Singh, who was Chief Guest on the occasion said that the day seeks to focus on the contribution of the handloom sector towards socio-economic development and increase in the income of weavers.

Vikramjit Singh said the National Handloom Day is celebrated on 7th August every year since 2015, to generate awareness about the importance of Handloom Industry and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the country.

He said that government has launched many schemes for the welfare of the weaver community. He asked the concerned officers to make principal stakeholders aware about the various schemes so that they are able to avail the benefits envisaged under these programmes.

Director Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, Mahmood Ahmad Shah said that celebrating Handloom Day is very important in the Kashmir context as Shawls, Carpets are famous world over due to their finesse and uniqueness of style and quality.

He said that weavers in Kashmir have worked really hard to keep this craft alive and it is a recognition of their efforts that UNESCO picked Srinagar as "Creative City" and recently recognised as World Craft City by the World Craft Council.

Mahmood Shah said that Handloom Day is being celebrated to focus on craftsmen and glorify the weaver community whose efforts are bearing fruits and are being recognised at the world stage.
