Govt deploys team to assess new site for GMC Handwara's relocation
Kupwara, June 06: Following Greater Kashmir’s recent expose on the limbo surrounding GMC Handwara, the J&K Government has deputed a high-level team to assess a new site at Nutnussa village.
As per Government Order No. 387-JK(HME) of 2025, a three-member panel—comprising the Principal GMC Handwara, Director Coordination (New GMCs), and Administrator GMC Srinagar—will evaluate 168 kanals and 14 marlas of land. The team has been instructed to submit its report within a week, in consultation with the district administration and relevant technical departments.
The swift move follows GK’s report highlighting the stalled project, which has been operating from rented buildings for over three years, and the looming threat of de-recognition by the NMC. Around ₹40 crore has already been spent on the flood-prone Gund Chogal site.
The government has also directed the exploration of additional land to meet the 200-kanal requirement set by the NMC, aiming to revive what was once envisioned as a flagship healthcare project for border district Kupwara.
