Govt committed to press freedom, ensuring secure environment for journalists: LG

Srinagar, Feb 15: Lieutenant Governor, Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha on Monday reaffirmed his government's commitment to press freedom, emphasizing that a free, independent, and responsible press is the cornerstone of a vibrant democracy.

Speaking in the legislative assembly, Sinha highlighted the crucial role of the media in shaping public discourse, holding institutions accountable, and keeping citizens informed.

He said that the administration is dedicated to creating a secure and transparent environment for journalists to operate without fear or restrictions.

"My government remains firmly committed to upholding press freedom, ensuring that journalists can operate in an environment that is secure, transparent, and conducive to free expression," LG said.

He further said that efforts are underway to strengthen press infrastructure, enhance access to information, and protect the rights of journalists. These measures, he noted, reaffirm the administration’s unwavering dedication to democratic values and an open society.

However, the LG also underscored the importance of responsible journalism, stating that while freedom of expression is fundamental, it must be exercised with responsibility and in alignment with the national interest.
