Government Cracks Down on Drug Trafficking Across India
New Delhi, March 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reaffirmed the government's commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking. He emphasized that the Modi government is determined to punish those who push young people into addiction for financial gain.
In a post on social media platform X, Home Minister Amit Shah said: “The Modi government is relentless in punishing drug traffickers who endanger our youth for profit. Under PM Modi’s leadership, we remain committed to a drug-free Bharat with ruthless and thorough investigations. #NashaMuktBharat"
Recently, courts across the country have convicted 29 drug traffickers in 12 different cases, thanks to the rigorous investigations led by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). These convictions demonstrate the success of the government’s "Bottom to Top" and "Top to Bottom" strategy against drug crime.
Major Drug Busts and Convictions Across India
Ahmedabad Zone
In July 2019, NCB Ahmedabad seized nearly 24 kg of Charas at Sabarmati Railway Station and arrested three individuals. They were sentenced to 14 years in prison and fined ₹1 lakh each.
Bhopal Zone (Mandsaur)
In July 2022, NCB intercepted two cars in Madhya Pradesh carrying 123 kg of Ganja. Five people were convicted and sentenced to 12 years in jail with ₹2 lakh fines each.
Chandigarh Zone
In one case, officers intercepted a parcel with two hockey sticks filled with 438 grams of opium at a courier service in Ludhiana. Two individuals were sentenced to three years in jail and fined ₹10,000.
In another case, a man caught with 390 grams of Charas at Chandigarh Railway Station was sentenced to six months in jail and fined ₹5,000.
Cochin Zone
In June 2021, a Zimbabwean woman was caught at Cochin Airport with 2.9 kg of heroin. She was sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined ₹3 lakh.
Dehradun Zone
In January 2018, NCB seized 450 grams of Charas, leading to two arrests. One convict received one year of rigorous imprisonment and a ₹20,000 fine.
Delhi Zone
In March 2021, NCB Delhi seized 1.9 kg of Charas, leading to the arrest and conviction of two individuals. They were sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined ₹1 lakh each.
Hyderabad Zone
In February 2021, NCB Hyderabad seized 681 kg of Ganja at a toll plaza in Telangana. Eight individuals were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹1 lakh each.
Indore Zone
In September 2021, NCB Indore seized 152 kg of Ganja from a truck in Madhya Pradesh. Four people were convicted and sentenced to 15 years in jail with ₹1 lakh fines each.
Kolkata Zone
In July 2020, officers seized 1,301 kg of Ganja from a truck in West Bengal. The accused was sentenced to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment with a ₹1 lakh fine.
Lucknow Zone
In February 2022, NCB Lucknow seized 3.1 kg of Charas, leading to a 15-year sentence and a ₹1.5 lakh fine for the accused.
In January 2024, NCB Lucknow seized 8 kg of Opium, resulting in an 11-year prison sentence and a ₹1 lakh fine.
