Srinagar, Nov 9: Professor and Head of the Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, Dr S Muhammad Salim Khan, was conferred with fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS) Award which was presided by Prof Ashim Kumar Ghosh, Governor of Haryana during the convocation of National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) during 65th annual conference of NAMS (NAMSCON 2025) held at PGIMER, Chandigarh.

A statement of GMC Srinagar issued here said that Dr Khan has been elected as a fellow of the National Academy of Medicine Sciences (India) for the year 2025 in recognition of his academic excellence and professional achievements.

He was elected as a member of NAMS a decade ago.

Dr Khan is the second NAMS fellow from GMC Srinagar, the first being Prof Syed Naseer Ahmad Shah, former Principal and Dean, who was awarded FAMS in 1979.

He has done MBBS and MD in Social and Preventive Medicine (now called Community Medicine) from Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, under the University of Kashmir (KU), and has also done Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital and Health Management (PGDHHM) and ICMR-sponsored Post-Graduate Diploma in Bioethics (PGD Bioethics) from IGNOU.

Dr Khan has a Certificate of Achievement of MECOR Level 1, 2, and 3 from the American Thoracic Society.

He achieved a two-year FAIMER fellowship with distinction from Foundation for Advancement of Medical Education and Research (FAIMER, Philadelphia) at PSG-FAIMER Regional Institute, Coimbatore in 2013, being the first FAIMER fellow from GMC Srinagar.

Dr Khan has also been conferred fellowship awards in recognition of his contributions to Public Health by the Indian Public Health Association (FIPHA), the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (FIAPSM), and the Indian Medical Association – Academy of Medical Specialties (FIAMS).

He has around 150 research publications to his credit, including publications in The Lancet, The Lancet Regional Health-Southeast Asia, BMJ Open, PLOS journal series (PLOS One, PLOS Medicine, PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases), and IJMR.

Dr Khan has been the principal investigator of over a dozen multi-centric studies, including vaccine trials.

He’s a member of around 20 committees established by government and other agencies and is also a member of about 30 international and national professional and humanitarian societies and bodies.

Dr Khan is chairman of two institutional ethics committees and a member of a few more institutional ethics committees and review boards of various universities, institutions, and medical colleges in J&K.

He has been the unit head of the international chair in bioethics (previously UNESCO chair in bioethics) since 2015.

Dr Khan is also currently president of J&K Medical Council, overseeing registration of allopathic doctors and ethical conduct of medical practitioners, and also conducted one conference (JK MEDICON 2025) and CME on Bioethics and Medical Education by international faculty this year under the J&K Medical Council banner.

As HOD Community Medicine, GMC Srinagar, he has also been conducting workshops in quantitative and qualitative research methodology, systematic review, and meta-analysis for faculty and resident doctors over the last 11 years.

Dr Khan organised a four-day 52nd annual national-level conference of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSMCON 2025) in April this year at SKICC Srinagar with over 1200 registered delegates.

He appears regularly in the media for health awareness and advisories, and has created an institutional health awareness platform on YouTube titled Kashealth, supported by J&K National Health Mission.
