Srinagar, Apr 04:After a violent shootout near Government Medical College (GMC) Kathua on Tuesday between police and gangsters in which a police sub-inspector was also killed, an intense searches have been launched to trace the gang members in Sherpura Wadala area of Kathua.

Quoting officials, news agency KNS reported that the operation is aimed at apprehending the gang members on the run to ensure those involved are brought to justice.

Probationer Sub-Inspector Deepak Sharma, a 32-year-old officer hailing from Sangoor village in Udhampur district, was killed during the shootout with gangsters, while one of gang member was also killed.

Serving at the Ramgarh Police Station in Samba district, Sharma sustained fatal head injuries in the confrontation, ultimately succumbing to his wounds.

The encounter also resulted in the end of Vasudev, a wanted criminal who led the notorious 'Shannu gang,' while a Special Police Officer (SPO) sustained injuries in the firefight.

Expressing solidarity with the bereaved family, J&K police DGP, R R Swain has pledged to eradicate criminal activities from the Union Territory.

He affirmed the police force's unwavering commitment to intensify efforts against narcotics and gangsters, ensuring that the sacrifice of PSI Deepak Sharma does not go in vain.

"Jammu Police has escalated its battle against narcotics and gangsters in recent times," DGP Swain stated, emphasizing the imperative to dismantle criminal syndicates attempting to proliferate in the region.

He reiterated the force's determination to confront and neutralize criminal elements engaged in nefarious activities including land deals, narcotics trade, and bovine smuggling.

Highlighting the evolving tactics of criminals, Swain noted their increasing audacity and arms, signaling a shift towards more confrontational approaches.

Nevertheless, he affirmed the police's resolve to counter such threats with heightened vigilance and strategic enforcement measures.

As the manhunt operation unfolds in Sherpur Wadala , law enforcement agencies remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice, vowing to apprehend the escaped gangsters and others involved in criminal activities, Swain said.
