GMC Handwara performs 1st single-incision gallbladder surgery

Handwara, Oct 21: The Department of Surgery at Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara achieved a milestone by performing its first Single Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (SILS) on a 19-year-old female patient with symptomatic cholelithiasis.

A statement said that using instruments designed by Prof. Giovanni Dapri of Italy, a global pioneer in single-incision surgery, the procedure allowed maximum precision through a minimal incision, ensuring reduced pain and almost no visible scar.

The surgery was led by Dr Jan M. Rather, along with Drs. Muzaffer and Asif. The anaesthesia team, headed by Dr Tahira with Dr Reyaz Qadri and the OT staff, supported the procedure.
