GMC Baramulla performs first cervical spine surgery
Baramulla, Jun 27: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla have successfully performed a highly complex cervical spine surgery, replacing four cervical discs with specialized implants.
It is for the first time that such a procedure has been successfully conducted in any newly established medical college in Jammu & Kashmir, particularly in a peripheral hospital setting.
A spokesperson of GMC Baramulla said that this rare and intricate surgery is rarely performed, even at premier institutes like SKIMS.
“The successful conduct of the surgery shows the rapidly growing capabilities of emerging medical institutions in the area.”
The surgical team was led by Dr. Abdul Rashid, Ex-HOD, SKIMS, including Dr. Mehmood, HoD Surgery, Dr. Humam, Dr. Sajid, and Dr. Ishfaq, whose collective efforts were instrumental in the success of the procedure.
The Department of Anesthesia, the high-risk anesthesia and intensive care were meticulously managed by Dr. Waseem Salmaan, HOD Anaesthesia, Dr. Owais, Assistant Professor and Dr. Safeena.
The dedicated operation theatre team, Abdul Qayoom Shah, Mudasir Ahmad, Nazir Changa, Asgar, Hilal, along with Neelofar and Rubaya, provided seamless support throughout the procedure.
On this occasion, Special appreciation was extended to Medical Superintendent Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi, the Amrit Pharmacy, and the Ayushman Bharat team for ensuring logistical and financial support.
Notably, the surgery, valued at over `50,000 in implant costs, was provided completely free of charge, exemplifying the institution's commitment to inclusive and compassionate healthcare.
