GMC Anantnag secures 50 additional MBBS, 18 MD/MS seats
Srinagar, Oct 17: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 50 additional MBBS and 18 MD/MS seats for Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, effective from the 2025–26 academic year.
The development increases GMC Anantnag’s MBBS intake to 150 students, offering greater opportunities for aspiring medical professionals in Jammu and Kashmir and strengthening the college as a key healthcare and medical education provider in the region.
The 18 new MD/MS seats are distributed across major departments, including General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, and Anaesthesia, with four seats each, while the ENT department has secured two. The college administration said the expansion of MD/MS seats will enhance speciality services across South Kashmir.
Principal Prof. Rukhsana Najeeb credited the achievement to the coordinated efforts of medical professionals, faculty, administration, and the Health and Medical Education Department. She expressed gratitude to the Secretary of Health and Medical Education, Dr Syed Abid Rashid Shah.
“The college proactively ensured that all NMC criteria for seat enhancement were met on time,” she added.
Over September and October, NMC also increased MBBS seats in several other J&K colleges, including GMC Srinagar, GMC Jammu, GMC Baramulla, and GMC Kathua. With this latest allocation, the total MBBS seats in J&K now stand at 1,575 for the 2025–26 academic year.
Further seat increases are expected in the next academic session as part of a nationwide drive to expand medical education opportunities in India.
