GMC Anantnag Neonatal Intensive Care Unit starts delivering high-end services
Anantnag, May 29: In a highly significant development, Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag discharges the first case of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) after managing it successfully on CPAP.
This is the first case managed on non-invasive ventilation at GMC Anantnag.
This neonate was delivered through LSCS at MCCH Hospital and was shifted to NICU, MMABM Associated Hospital given severe respiratory distress. On admission, the baby was clinically diagnosed as a case of malignant TTN and RDS with a Down's score of 6. The baby was put on CPAP support and was managed as per internationally followed protocol for managing RDS.
Today, on the 8th day of admission, the patient was discharged home in room air and on oral feeds.
GMC Anantnag was started in 2019 and Neonatal Intensive Care was made functional only recently.
It was possible to start NICU services only after shifting the pediatric department to MMABM Associated Hospital from space-crunched MCCH Sherbag.
Department of Pediatrics GMC Anantnag has experienced staff to take care of the neonatal and pediatric population. In addition to efficient resident, nursing and ancillary staff, highly qualified and experienced faculty members and consultants are working in the department.
The senior Pediatrician team consists of the Head of the Department Showkat Hussain Tali, Dr Malik Shakir Hussain, Dr BIlal Ahmad Najar, Dr Asif Aziz Wani, Dr Andleeb Majeed, Dr Jawad, and Dr Nisar Ahmad.
Despite having the first National Board-certified neonatologist of J&K, the department was not able to run NICU services for the want of safe and sufficient space and appropriate machinery.
The Department of Pediatrics thanked the Principal and Dean of GMC Anantnag, Prof Rukhsana Najeeb for leading from the front for setting up an NICU at GMC Anantnag.
Senior faculty members praised the hard work of senior residents, postgraduate students, medical officers, junior residents, nursing and ancillary staff, and other support staff for contributing significantly towards the improvement of patient care and academics at the department.
Prof Rukhsana, who personally monitored the successful discharge of the first critically sick newborn from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of GMC Anantnag praised the effort of all the faculty members, consultants and other staff to make NICU functional at GMC Anantnag.
She reiterated her full support to the Department of Paediatrics for setting up paediatrics emergency services, PICU, NICU, HDU, NRC, DEIC, inpatient and immunisation, and other services in full swing.
