Srinagar, Jan 14: “When Indian students are going to other counties for higher education 4 times in a year (fall,  spring, summer, winter) then why are Indian students given only a chance to take admission once in a year to pursue Higher Education?”

This was stated  by Dr Anshu Kataria, President, Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA); Federation of Self Financing Technical Institutions (FSFTI), All India and Chairman, Aryans Group of Colleges, Rajpura,  Near Chandigarh in an AICTE workshop wherein more than 700 colleges from Punjab, Haryana,  Himachal, Rajasthan, Chandigarh participated.

In 2018, 5 Lakhs; 2019, 5.86 Lakhs, 2020, 2.5 lakhs even in Covid restrictions; 2021, 4.4 Lakhs; 2022, over 7.5 Lakhs went abroad. While in 2023, there are 8.5 lakhs students for higher education in various 4 academic batches for study abroad programmes.

On the other hand, as per All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and University Grants Commission (UGC), in India students can take admission only once in a year. If he fails to get admitted due to any reason, his entire year gets spoiled. Why are these restrictions for Indian students as well as for educational Institutions?

Kataria also said that as per UGC notification 1-2/2023 dated 29 November, 2023 the students have been allowed to give examinations in local languages but this also has not been implemented in many states of India. As per New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, AICTE has also developed the content for  11-12 local languages for students but state affiliating government universities are not implementing and technical students are facing problems during examinations which is a matter of concern.

Kataria urged AICTE and UGC to intervene at the earliest and to allow students to write examinations in their own languages.

He also urged AICTE to file a review petition in the Supreme Court so that the only cut off date for admission can be made flexible and like abroad, students may get the chance for admission in various courses.
