German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visits India, boosts strategic partnership
New Delhi, Sept 3: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul paid his first official visit to India from September 1–3, accompanied by a high-level business delegation, highlighting the growing economic and strategic ties between the two nations. During the visit, Mr. Wadephul called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held delegation-level talks with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. He also met Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Discussions covered the full spectrum of the India–Germany Strategic Partnership, including trade and investment, defence, technology, science and innovation, sustainable development, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
The two sides agreed to introduce gratis visas for short-term school and college visits to encourage student mobility.
The ministers also exchanged views on global and regional developments, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Middle East, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. Both countries are working to establish a new consultation mechanism on Indo-Pacific affairs. India expressed appreciation for Germany’s strong support in its fight against terrorism.
Earlier, in Bengaluru, the German Foreign Minister visited technology and innovation hubs, including the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), highlighting opportunities for collaboration in green technology, AI, digital transformation, space, and sustainable urban development. The visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the India–Germany Strategic Partnership, which both sides reaffirmed as being rooted in mutual trust, democratic values, and a shared commitment to global stability and sustainable growth.
