Srinagar, June 7:  Under the patronage of Principal Govt. Degree College, Sumbal, Prof (Dr) Shabeena Iqbal Shawl, Department of Botany organised model making competition on 6th June.

Renowned botanists Prof. Yaseen Maqbool (GDC Anantnag), Dr Tabasum Nazir Qadri (GDC Pattan) and Prof. Tabasum Habib (GDC Ganderbal) were invited as judges for the competition. Introductory address was delivered by Dr. Fahima Gul (Head Dept of Botany). She highlighted the scope of model making in understanding the concepts of Botany and laid stress on the role of such events in overall development of the students.

Speaking on the occasion Principal GDC Sumbal Prof Shabeena congratulated the Department of Botany for organising the event. She encouraged the students to realise the potential of their

creativity and believe in their innovative learning practices. Prof Yaseen Maqbool (GDC Anantnag) delivered a talk on the types of models and how models can display microscopic structures, or bring to light slow or fast occurring processes. He congratulated the team on taking such a novel initiative in the Higher Education Department.

Around fourty models were listed for the competition which took place in theDepartment of Botany. Aaatif Nabi bagged the best model prize for his model on anatomical studies of bark. The models of Moomin Ahmad Mir and Sabreena Gul ranked second and third. The winners were awarded certificates and cash prizes by Principal GDC Sumbal.

Prof Yassen Maqbool (GDC Anantnag) awarded copies of his book titled “Anatomy of Angiosperms” to ten consolation prize winners. Shahid Ahmad Ganie, a second semester student, offered a vote of gratitude, while Dr Mehrajuddin Talie of the Department of Botany served as the rapporteur. The event was moderated by Dr Mehvish Showkat, (Head Department of Biochemistry).
