Srinagar, Nov 29: Government Degree College Hyderpora on Saturday held an awareness programme under the Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign, focusing on the growing threat of drug abuse and the collective duty of society to curb it.

A statement said that the event, organised by the college’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Coordinator in collaboration with the NSS Unit, underlined the institution’s commitment to student well-being and community responsibility.

Dr. Majid Shafi, Consultant Psychiatrist and Nodal Officer for Mental Health & Addiction Treatment at the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir, delivered the keynote address. He spoke in detail about the psychological, social and health consequences of substance abuse, stressing the urgency of preventive awareness. Dr. Shafi highlighted the critical role educational institutions play in building informed, resilient youth and also discussed challenges faced by Gen Z, including information overload and declining attention spans.

He was joined by Dr. Syed Umer, who outlined various treatment and rehabilitation strategies for addiction. He explained the importance of early identification, counselling, structured recovery plans and strong family support, emphasizing that addiction is treatable when approached with empathy and scientific understanding.

College Principal Dr. Sharief Ud Din Khan welcomed the guests and reaffirmed the importance of sustained awareness efforts to counter the drug menace. He praised the organisers for holding a session aimed at guiding students towards healthier choices.

A question–answer session followed, with students raising concerns about mental health issues, drug dependence and preventive strategies. The experts addressed each query in detail, providing guidance and practical advice.

The proceedings were conducted by Prof. Abdaal Ahmad Bhat, Coordinator Nasha Mukt Bharat, while Prof. Nisar Ahmad delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the resource persons, faculty, NSS volunteers and students for their active participation.
