Ganderbal, Sep 24: The Department of Botany at Government Degree College (GDC) Ganderbal, in collaboration with the college’s NCC and NSS units, organised a large-scale plantation drive on Wednesday as part of the nationwide celebration of Sewa Parv.

The drive, held within the college campus, aimed to promote environmental awareness, encourage student participation in community service, and contribute to a greener and healthier environment.

The event was inaugurated by Prof Fouzia Fatima, Principal of GDC Ganderbal, in the presence of faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students. In her address, she highlighted the importance of plants in maintaining ecological balance, reducing pollution, and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Prof Irfana Amin Qureshi, Head of the Botany Department and Nodal Officer for Sewa Parv, stressed the role of plantation drives in conserving biodiversity. Dr Shabana Aslam, senior faculty and event coordinator, emphasised the need to sensitize students about climate change and their responsibility towards environmental protection.

During the drive, students were divided into groups and assigned designated areas for plantation, guided by Prof Tabasum Habib, Dr Afreen Rehman, and supported by NSS Programme Officers Dr Jamsheeda Akhter, Dr Mansha Nisar, and ANO NCC Wing Dr Mansoor Ahmed Lone.

Nearly 500 saplings, including ornamental, medicinal, and shade-loving varieties, were planted across the campus. The initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, non-teaching staff, and college gardeners, making the drive a resounding success.
