Ganderbal, Mar 20: The Department of Botany, Government Degree College Ganderbal in collaboration with College Eco Club celebrated Arbor Day today to raise awareness on the importance of tree plantation.

College Principal Prof Fouzia Fatima was the chief guest on the occasion. In her special remarks, Prof Fatima congratulated the students for participating in the programme in large numbers. She urged the students to become ambassadors of tree plantation and help combat the impacts of climate change.

Acknowledging the efforts of the Department of Botany and the College Eco Club, the Principal stressed on holding such programmes regularly so that students become fully conscious of their responsibilities towards environment conservation.

Dr Shabana Aslam from Department of Botany, Coordinator of the programme and Convenor College Eco Club welcomed the chief guest, other guests and student participants.

Stating that today’s programme was held under the aegis of events related to Viksit Bharat@2047, Dr Shabana also highlighted the importance of Arbor Day celebrations and the role of student community in creating awareness on environmental issues.

Dr Mehreen Khaleel, Scientist and Conservation Biologist was the speaker at the programme. She delivered a talk on the importance of planting trees and the role of students in restoring the green spaces around their vicinity.

Student speakers from the Department of Botany including Bisma Ali, Neelofer Jan, Showkat Ahmed Sheikh, Shugufta Anjum Neelofar Jan spoke about varied aspects related to the theme.

Neelofar Jan and Saika Maqbool, students of 6th semester Botany conducted the proceedings of the event. Certificates of participation were presented to the student speakers by the College Principal.

Prof Tabasum Habib, Assistant Professor Botany and also one of the coordinators presented the formal vote of thanks. Heads of various departments and other faculty members were also present on the occasion, besides the non-teaching staff of the Botany Department.
