Garbage sheds irk people in Pulwama’s Ratnipora village
Pulwama, Feb 12: Residents of Ratnipora village in south Kashmir's Pulwama district are facing immense inconveniences due to dumping of household waste outside the garbage sheds.
Although the Rural Development Department constructed garbage sheds in the area to improve waste management and sanitation, the garbage is thrown outside the sheds.
According to residents, an overpowering smell emanating from the heaps of garbage, causing tremendous inconveniences to them.
" We are unable to sit inside our homes due to the foul smell spreading round the clock from the mountains of garbage", said Mohammad Yaqoob, a local resident.
He said that the heaps of garbage also attracted dogs, posing a threat to the lives of residents.
"Stray dogs are often seen rummaging through the waste, leading to the spread of garbage across the streets", said Yaqoob.
Many residents said that most of the garbage sheds were constructed in the wrong locations--either near the water bodies or on the roadsides.
"These sheds are now polluting the water bodies. They should have been constructed at some convenient locations", said the residents. An official said that it was important for the people to use the designated garbage sheds for dumping their household waste to avoid any inconvenience. “People must develop a civic sense to ensure the cleanliness of their surroundings", said the official.
The residents, however, said that most of these sheds remain closed, forcing the residents to litter on the streets.
