From space to science olympiads, India shines on global stage: PM Modi in ‘Mann Ki Baat’

New Delhi, Jul 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his monthly radio address, Mann Ki Baat, spotlighted the country’s growing scientific achievements and the rising enthusiasm among young Indians following major developments in space exploration and education.

The Prime Minister referred to the recent return of Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla from space, describing it as a moment of national pride. He drew a parallel with the excitement seen during the Chandrayaan-3 landing in August 2023, which sparked widespread curiosity about science among children and inspired many to dream of becoming space scientists.

Modi also spoke about the success of the INSPIRE-MANAK Abhiyan, a national initiative aimed at encouraging innovation among schoolchildren. Under the initiative, five students from each school propose new ideas, and participation has surged significantly since Chandrayaan-3, with lakhs of children now engaged.

India’s space sector, he noted, has witnessed a rapid rise in start-up activity. From fewer than 50 space start-ups five years ago, the country now boasts over 200 ventures in the sector.

Marking the growing importance of space science, the Prime Minister reminded listeners that August 23 will be celebrated as National Space Day, and invited suggestions from citizens on how to commemorate the day, especially through the NaMo App.

In the field of science education, Indian students have earned international recognition. At the International Chemistry Olympiad, four Indian students:  Devesh Pankaj, Sandeep Kuchi, Debdutt Priyadarshi, and Ujjwal Kesari secured top honours. Similarly, at the International Mathematical Olympiad held in Australia, Indian students won three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.

Looking ahead, Modi said India will host the Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad next month in Mumbai, with participation from over 60 countries,  the largest edition of the Olympiad so far. Scientists and students alike are expected to participate, further solidifying India’s growing stature in global science education. Concluding his address, the Prime Minister stated that India is advancing with equal vigour in both the Olympics and Olympiads, reflecting the country’s expanding capabilities and aspirations in the 21st century.
