From Passion to Profit
Amidst the picturesque landscapes of Gund Goushi, Kupwara in North Kashmir, a fragrant oasis has bloomed, offering a sustainable haven for nature enthusiasts. BOTANIQUE, an aromatic plant nursery founded by Amir Mir, an MSc Agronomy graduate from Panjab University, has become a beacon of hope and environmental consciousness in the region.
Established in February 2022 with the seed of an idea and a heart full of passion, Amir's venture was nurtured by the Floriculture Department's subsidy, providing him with a greenhouse and expert guidance. With an initial investment of Rs 10 lakh, BOTANIQUE has flourished, boasting a reserve stock valued at Rs 20 lakh and a diverse collection of more than two thousand plants, ranging in price from Rs 10 to Rs 20,000.
The nursery's success is evident in its annual earnings of Rs 7 lakh, a testament to the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly practices in cultivating and distributing herbs, flowers, and other aromatic botanicals. BOTANIQUE's vibrant hub emphasizes sustainable and environmentally conscious practices, nurturing a diverse array of fragrant plants amid the serene beauty of nature.
Reflecting on his journey, Amir shares, "When I was studying outside, I would see different youth selling these plants in various markets of Chandigarh. I initially bought some plants for my garden at home. Over time, my collection grew. After completing my studies, I was confused about my future journey.
Amidst this uncertainty, a few of my friends advised me to pursue my interest and understanding of aromatic plants, recognizing my passion and knowledge in this area".
Encouraged by his friends and driven by his love for aromatic plants, Amir established BOTANIQUE. What started as a small personal collection has now flourished into a thriving, sustainable business. His story is not just one of personal success but also of inspiration for the youth of the valley.
Amir's message to the educated unemployed youth of the valley is clear and empowering, "Instead of waiting and wasting time to get government jobs, the youth should come up with their own entrepreneurial ventures so that they can be job givers instead of job seekers".
"I don't believe that unemployment has increased manifold, we should understand that government can't provide jobs to every one. There are numerous financial assistance schemes being run by different government departments for the benefit of youth. The fact of the matter is that youth should come forward and take benefit of these schemes" Amir told this correspondent while sitting in his plant nursery.
Amir who is firm believer of hardwork said that nothing can be achieved without handwork. "Initially my neighbours and relatives would talk ill of me but now with the growing success, I have earned respect in their eyes, in fact many take advice from me about starting their own venture," he added.
